..Because there are no corresponding isolates on the animal side, as there are with other viruses that made a species jump (e.g. HIV/SIV). You can’t really make an argument for what led to the big bang, from its observed consequences. So the article is advocative - no crossover event has been traced, actually. It is based on likelihood and precedent, not presenting actual evidence of a species crossover. As for the Sacklers and Yale, it seems a little unfair to cite an article in which Yale Med school’s apparently scrupulously cut all ties with, and funding from the Sacklers, as an example of Yale’s med school funding by the Sacklers. It seems they did the right thing in that case, - Shyaku
