Dear Editor, So often we see in the pages of the Morning Star issues overlooked by the mainstream media. However, today it was disappointing to see there was no coverage in the Star of the demonstration at Lakenheath USAF/RAF air base in Suffolk. On Saturday 19th November, activists came from across the UK to protest at the likely return of US/NATO nuclear weapons and nuclear capable aircraft to the UK. Originally under NATO’s nuclear sharing policy there were six US/NATO nuclear armed bases across Europe: in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey and the UK. There were widespread protests and non-violent direct action from CND, Trident Ploughshares, Lakenheath Action Group and others in the UK against these nuclear weapons. The NATO arms and aircraft were removed from the UK in 2008; we believe because of the resistance. Now, with no discussion in Parliament, or the Local authorities, weapons and the aircraft ware due to return. These weapons will not keep us safe; they make the UK a target. Moreover the B-61 nuclear gravity bombs have a yield of upwards of 400 kilotons; the bomb on Hiroshima with all the devastation and suffering it caused had a yield of 15 kilotons. A massive increase in killing power. And it needs to be remembered that all this military hardware plays a big part in carbon emissions and global warming. There we were outside the gates of the base spelling out the facts with speeches and placards, when someone noticed a safety notice on the fence. It said smoking was prohibited except in designated areas. No safety notice about nuclear weapons! One thing was clear we will continue our protests against this insanity until the weapons are removed. At the same time continue campaigning for more states, including the UK, to sign up to the UN negotiated Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear weapons (TPNW), now signed and ratified by 68 states.
