Interesting article, Keith. Do you follow Bella Caledonia? This outlet's most recent headlined article https://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2022/11/26/let-the-people-decide-3/

It would be nice to know who Jamie Maxwell is. presumably a left wing commentator, as he writes for a left wing outlet The New Left Review.

His very first sentence, which I think is intended to summarise his whole article, reads, "Increasingly, Scottish nationalists are peddling a dream they can’t deliver." - does he mean the SNP or Scottish nationalists as a citizen concept. His opinion may be true of the SNP but not of the latter. Sufficient numbers of Scottish nationalists will indeed deliver independence at some indeterminate time. . Long term the Supreme Court decision is irrelevant.

We live in an increasingly fraught world. The reality of environmental destruction and the failure of capitalism as presently practiced are bring challenges to all societies, These challenges have barely even started yet.

At some time the hardships inflicted might well cause the various societies the UK to fall apart - and the Scots might prefer their own anarchy to someone else's. Scotland has a smallish population, great wind and tidal natural energy resources. plenty of water, and could well be self-sufficient in food.

It will do all nations, and the planet, good to become more self reliant and ecologically aware. Globalisation depends hugely on abundant cheap fossil fuel energy. The lack of the latter, enforced by legislation or by geological constraints, will seriously impede the former, and I'd consider that something to be welcomed. Modern technology and knowledge means we do not need to return to horse and wagons and candlelight, but it might mean we can still enjoy a happy and fulfilled life with much less demands on each other or the planet. As Scotland's previous inhabitants so effectively contributed to The Enlightenment, the West's moral and philosophical guidelines for the last two hundred years, I'd like to think Scotland's present inhabitants could do the same for the next two hundred.
