Good article, thx for posting. I'm starting to think the test for a true environmentalist should be whether they talk about other species apart from humans. If not it's usually because they care more about sustaining the current way of life (along with whatever relative comforts & privileges they might draw from it) than about saving the planet, as the article shows. One of the things that drew me to Extinction Rebellion was that first word coupled with acknowledgement of the biodiversity crisis (as alienated as that phrase is), ie: a rebellion against the processes leading to mass extinctions of other-than-human plants and animals. Gradually the meaning has shifted to a rebellion against the prospect of human extinction, through failure of agriculture, 'wet bulb' heat events etc. So, back to it being all about us then... species chauvinism as somebody described it. And even this has more to do with saving civilisation rather than saving us as an animal species in our own right, better adapted in any case to small-scale tribe or village societies. It's like slaves organising to protect the viability of the plantation economy. For people like Jem Bendell and even Roger Hallam the collapse of civilisation is the worst thing they can imagine happening, instead of a golden opportunity to finally be free of this destructive, oppressive system. What's the point of saving this particular way of life if we'll be the only ones left on the planet apart from the 'precision fermented' microbes in our food labs? Kill me now if that's where we're headed... cheers, I
