There are a number of issues I disagree with Matlock, but perhaps the first one that came up is that he commented about USSR not imposing agricultural policy on Poland, because it damaged the economy in USSR. From my readings, although kolkhoz (there was another system running in tandem, but can't remember the name of it) or collective agricultural system was at first not workable for various reasons, and Lenin did make a concession with his NEP policies (capitalist road, so to speak ish), and eventually the collective system started outproducing pre WW1 output, ready for the WW2, as it happens. I remember seeing these figures and was convinced this is true. Just something that jumped out for me ..
