It could easily have been much, much worse. Compared to most stuff published in the UK, this is magisterial. Still it seems the author doesn't believe the hugely powerful new army the Russians have created is going radically change the course of the war. In that case one wonders why they bothered? I imagine the next few months will answer that question, one way, or another. The tricky question about how the West will react to a Russian victory and a complete defeat for the West in Ukraine, seems not to even strike the author as a remote possibility.
