Poland would have to be mad .. After ploughing through Bandera book cited below, a few days ago (full of unpleasant historical facts .. and thus difficult reading : /) I cannot understand why Poland would want to have anything to do with this land. As Mercouris speculates, I get a feeling RF (as Putin alluded) doesn't want it and it may not be so strategic. For example, in Summer 1941 OUN-B together with Germans slaughtered 250,000 Jews in Easterns Galicia and Volhynia. Thereafter when they started running out of Jews, they started on Poles. They couldn't find too many soviets who fled to eastern Ukraine. Absolutely horrific - my head is still spinning, days after reading it. Grzegorz Rossoliński-Liebe - Stepan Bandera_ The Life and Afterlife of a Ukrainian Nationalist-ibidem-Verlag (2014) A strange book without page numbers, but with extensive references. For info, from wiki - the population in 1910 was estimated to be 45.4% Polish, 42.9% Ruthenian, 10.9% Jewish, and 0.8% German. When they say Ruthenian I assume they mean Ukrainian etc.
