Russia was also defending itself against US-NATO interference in all its forms - including persistent pressure from America on the post-2014 Ukraine govt to provocatively appoint anti-Russian politicians and bureaucrats to key positions. The US and the post-2014 Ukraine regime were the initiating offensive provocateurs - Russia was forced to defensively react by mounting a counter "offensive". But we all know this to be true. What a pity that Putin didn't try mocking the US War Machine by asserting that Russia was also forced to protect itself against the very real Weapons of Mass Destruction that the US and NATO could clandestinely or openly supply to Ukraine at any time - especially if NATO membership were to be granted to Ukraine at any juncture.
