Of course it's depressing, anything truthful about humanity's place in our universe, but particularly its place on this planet, is going to be depressing. Everyone fears cancer, but the individual cancer cell has no realisation that in its success it is programmed to die as it kills the very thing that sustains it. We ourselves are now a cancer on this planet, but contrary to the cancer cell, an increasing number of us have gained the capacity to understand what we are doing, yet are powerless to stop doing it - now that's hard, that's depressing, that's existentially crippling.

Mr Cooke introduces a bit of Wordsworth in to his article, so do you know the "Ballad of Reading Gaol" by Oscar Wilde?. You must, surely. Here's my doggerel version of a couple of stanzas a propos this matter.

We will yet kill that we love,
Let this sober truth be heard,
Some will do it with a saw,
The coward with a twisted word,
Some with machine or monstrous gun,
And lay to waste as with a sword.

And Alien tears may shed for us,
    For we’ll no longer hear,
The world may then return anew
To native state, where’s banished fear.
