    Wow, not subtle is it?!

'You get the gist. This year's festive extravaganzas on Russian TV are a strange mixture of let's party and let's win on the battlefield.'

Right... because nobody in western media takes advantage of public celebrations to praise the armed forces and express support for their 'service'.

'President Putin used the address to promote the Kremlin's alternative reality: that in this conflict Russia's the hero and Ukraine and the West are the villains.

"For years, Western elites hypocritically assured us of their peaceful intentions…but in fact, they encouraged the neo-Nazis in every possible way," President Putin said.

"Defending our Motherland is the sacred duty we owe to our ancestors and descendants."

When the Kremlin talks about "defending our Motherland", keep in mind that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine. Not the other way around. '

Always instructive to see evidence that msm reporters are capable of sniffing out propaganda and arming their audience with a counter-critique. Funny how this never applies when they're covering the speeches of western leaders. Of course Putin is 100% correct about the culpability of the west in stoking & prolonging this conflict, but to analyse that claim honestly would reveal the beeb's own incessant propaganda on this, so it's something the reporter knows to pass over with glib dismissals.

'The assertion that, in this war, Russia is fighting for its sovereignty and independence is puzzling, to say the least.

For a start Russia has long been a sovereign, independent nation. Even if you accept Vladimir Putin's premise that Russia never achieved "full sovereignty" the question arises: why not? Mr Putin's been in power for 23 years. Long enough, you may think, to sort that.'

Deliberate refusal to explain the historical context here. Yeltsin, the oligarchy, the hyper-capitalist shock doctrine after the collapse of the USSR, the interference in their government when Clinton was asked permission to choose the next president (ironically Putin himself), then the sanctions designed to destroy their economy - none of this exists in BBC-land.

'There is no room for debate or discussion: the government expects the public to rally round and to support the president. Those Russians who don't will be made to feel they're betraying their Motherland.'

Projection. There's no 'debate or discussion' permitted on a host of crucially important topics in western media outlets, and a continuing pressure to comply with state-corporate orthodoxy on every level - and we're not even at war! If the situation was reversed western political elites and their media lackeys would be 10x worse than this.

    jeers,
    I
