There are a lot fewer opportunities for journalists than there used to be. Therefore universities and colleges have a lot of focus on employment prospects and how one best prepares them for the highly competative jobs market. This means that too much specialisation is a bad thing because one becomes too narrow to turn one's hand to anything. So the amount of knowledge about an area is shrinking at the very time more detailed knowledge is required! Then there's the time factor. Everyone complains that they don't have enough time to do proper indepth research for their articles. It's all back of taxi stuff. This structure means that the status quo is rarely challenged. Also challenging the status quo could easily get one labeled a 'conspiracy theorist' or a 'Putin supporter.' It's a truly miserable time to be a journalist. It's like joining a cult or a priesthood... the Guardians of the Truth.
