Only Corbyn and his advisors, supporters, didn't have the wherewithal, intelligence, temperament, abilities and will, to defend themselves, let alone go on the offensive against the Labour right. It's always been their party, espeically in parliament, and they were never going to allow someone like Corbyn to become a success. His role was that of leftie 'mascot' or 'jester'. He, of course, was far more 'nostalgic' about the Labour Party, the Tribe, tha the right, who see it as an instrument of power, not some movement for change in society. Corbyn's sentimentality and 'niceness' was a weakness, exploited by his enemies. It's remarkable that given his inside knowledge of how and what the Labour Party really was, that he was so unprepared and unable to mount an effective counter-attack. His young supporters deserved so much more from him, not just lame passivity and demobilization. |
