| I think I wrote here some months ago exactly the point that Scott Ritter makes here, that's Russia achieving its objectives which is the demilitarisation of Ukraine and take over the Donetsk, but keeping Ukraine as a functioning economy and society. it's in Russia's interests to have a docile and functioning country next door. That means not taking Odessa, and allowing Ukraine its important sea access. It's a negotiating lever that might work. The other thing is that Odessa has an architectural and environmental worth to the Russians that they'd love to keep intact, a battle for Odessa would likely destroy it. I did wonder too if the Odessa area could be under control of a dual authority even, or perhaps under UN auspices. At any rate a wise Putin would give Ukraine and NATO some sort of face-saving off ramp, and wrap up this war as quickly as possible. It's likely these new Russian areas will have deal with some US and Ukraine sponsored unrest(terrorist action from Russia's point of view) in these areas for quite a long time so security for these areas will still be a continuing issue. . |
