The problem I have with the various green solutions and the Green parties, is that they don't appear to have done their economic homework.

Basicslly... we can't have out cake and eat it. The transition away from fossil energy is going to be a collosal, historic, challenge for our civilzation, on a par with the Industrial Revolution itself; but in reverse! Really a form of planned and managed... 'de-industrialisation'. The various greens haven't thought this through. What that means for society, economics and the distribution of scarce resources and wealth and power. This isn't perhaps surprising, as replacing both the 'consumer society' and Capitalism itself, at the same time as one is attempting to leave the massive energy consumption of the last few centuries behind, is a mind-boggling prospect.

Societies that use far less energy, are much poorer materially than we are, and there's no real way around this. It's not just a simplistic question, or dogma, about turning away from fossil fuels, that's almost 'easy' compared to actually consuming far less than we do today, espeically in the rich western countries.

Politically I'm not convinced that the transition is even possible. Try telling voters that one's main policy is that they need to be much poorer and consume substantially less, of everything, than they do today! Good luck with that at the ballot box!

My fear is that the greens may, unwittingly, pave the way for a return to a form of fuedal society, with massive, structural, economic inequalities at its very heart.
