Russia, of course, didn't have much choice. The West had marched right up to its doorstep and Ukraine's military attacks had killed over ten thousand ethnic Russians in Donbas. That isn't the case with Taiwan. That alone gives the Chinese room to maneuver and choose the time and place for conflict with the US on its terms.
