I heard an interesting BBC interview with a retired Israeli general. He was a pilot, then chief of the Israeli airforce, then chief of the entire military.

He and six other top generals have expressed their open opposition to the Israeli government's planned changes to the relationship betweent the Supreme Court and the government, undermining the independence of the court and bringing it firmly under government control.

Futhermore, Israeli fighter pilots are demonstrating and 'working to rule.' They'll turn up for work, but won't fly. It's close to mutiny or perhaps insubordination. The pilots are concerned that they may be given an illegal order, for example to bomb a Palestinian town and 'wipe it off the map' which could subsequently open them to prosecution for war crimes by a relevant international body. The pilots are concerned that if the Supreme Court comes under state control, it won't be able to protect the pilots if they refuse to carry out an illegal order.

The general interviewed by the BBC thought that Israel was sliding into a dictatorship and democracy was threatened and under attack from the current government. This perspective shocked the BBC interviewer. The general believed that Netanyahu was undermining the independence of the Supreme Court because he was cynically attempting to avoid the court ruling that he was guilty of massive corruption.

The generals and the pilots are now being attacked by the extreme right for their lack of partriotism and loyalty to the state.

Who would have imagined that so many Israeli soldiers who've been fighting all their lives for Israel, would turn out to be antisemitic? Israel looks like it's in the grip of a religious, cultural, political, civil war, with polarization and hatred deepening with each passing day.
