Russian unsung nuke-armed submarine hero Vasili Arkhipov saved the world during Cuban crisis - won first US "FLI" Award for it.

Arkhipov quotes, links and vid follow - but first:

FLI = Future of Life Institute(founded in 2014)
    Wikipedia:

"Starting in 2017, FLI offered an annual Future of Life Award, with the first awardee being Vasili Arkhipov. Also in 2017, FLI released "Slaughterbots", a short arms-control advocacy film. FLI released a sequel in 2021."
"In 2018, FLI drafted a letter calling for "laws against lethal autonomous weapons". Signatories included Elon Musk, Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman."

Vasili Arkhipov - also from Wikipedia:

"Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov was the Soviet Naval officer who prevented a Soviet nuclear torpedo launch during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Such an attack likely would have caused a major global thermonuclear response, destroying large parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

"As flotilla Commodore as well as executive officer of the diesel powered submarine B-59, Arkhipov refused to authorize the captain and the political officer's use of nuclear torpedoes against the United States Navy, a decision which required the agreement of all three officers.
"In 2002, Thomas S. Blanton, then director of the U.S. National Security Archive, credited Arkhipov as "the man who saved the world".

    Take that JFK !
