Not so long ago, one might have read something along these lines within the pages of the 'left-leaning' media. There a few rays of light were allowed to shine through the heavy drapes of wartime propaganda. Alas, things are very different today, which is paradoxical as the stakes are so much higher for the UK itself. Unlike the neo-colonial wars we've been involved in over the last forty years, fighting far weaker states and lightly armed guerillas, leaving the homeland virtual unscathed, as we leveled far-off foreign lands, Russia is a great power with a strong army and, lest's not forget, a few thousand nuclear weapons and the capacity to destroy Britain's urban centres, wiping civilzation off the map, should things escalate in Ukraine.

Democracy, without opposition allowed? I'm having difficulty getting my head around that idea. A political/media consensus with war rhetoric that's off the scale, regardless of what the people might think, regardless of the consequences; and this is called our democratic values? And, officially we aren't even at war with Russia, yet!

In reality the checks and balances that are supposed to exist in our democratic system, have collapsed. The politicians rule and act and take decisions without any scruting, debate or control, and no criticism is allowed, let alone opposition. This isn't democracy. It's virtual dictatorship. Wartime dictatorship.
