What seems to have happened in the last one hundred years, is that rapacious capitalism and it's creation of massive, structural, inequalities in society; was checked or ameliorated, by the two World Wars, which required a level of 'wartime socialism' that redistributed wealth to a degree that was never seen before. In the post war period in the UK turning the supertanker of 'wartime socialism' around, took decades to achieve. It started in the 1970'd and really accelerated with a vengence under Margaret Thatcher, when the country was deindustrialised and the Welfare State hollowed out in order to crush the working class. Without the two world wars, inequality would have been much, much, worse. That's a sobering thought, but not one I imagine the liberal/left want to learn.
