RNZ National, Tuesday 11 April 2023, 10:50 p.m. Anyone from the BBC, no matter how vacuous (Dame Ann Leslie) or brutal (Lord Winston, Jonathan Freedland, Simon Schama) is accorded unquestioning respect from New Zealand media chatterboxes. Even someone like Rich Preston, who sounds unnervingly like Gareth from The Office, was treated like an expert when he appeared as the overseas guest on Tuesday evening... Evening host MARK LEISHMAN: I see that the Brazilian and Chinese governments are going to trade in the yuan rather than the U.S. dollar. RICH PRESTON: Yes, that means that they can bypass the Swift system. So that raises the question: what about sanctions? For example, when Russia invades Ukraine. Bypassing the Swift system makes it harder to deal with a country that isn't behaving itself. Leishman says nothing by way of demur. Then he moves to the next item on Rich Preston's agenda... MARK LEISHMAN: There's been another flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinians. RICH PRESTON: Yes, a lot of tit-for-tat violence. And, of course, each side has its own version of events. Yesterday Israeli troops were accused of killing a fifteen year old boy by shooting him in the head. But they say they had come under attack, so there's a lot of tit-for-tat. MARK LEISHMAN: There's a lot of instability in that part of the world. RICH PRESTON: Sadly, Mark, unless leaders on both sides do something, we're going to see more of these flare-ups. MARK LEISHMAN: Thanks very much, Rich, for your expertise.
