Given how ghastly most of the political establishment are... Starmer? Sunak? Charles seems, in constrast, preferable to them or people like them.
In a republic, John Major would probably be President, a purely cerimonial role, after all. One wouldn't want a directly elected head of state, surely?
Abolishing the monarchy is, in a country like Britain, an extremely radical and difficult thing to do. The last and only time, it required a civil war!
Arguably the opposition or the left in the UK have never been weaker, poorly led and intellectually berift of any real ideas that address the enormous challenges the country faces. So, don't expect them to be in a position to abolish the monarchy any time soon!
Obviously one needs to reform the monarchy and 'nationalise' it, reduce its size and open up the land and palaces to the public. Only that seems like a distant prospect as the left is close to non-existent in parliamentary terms.
