I’ll post an old essay on the subject here in due course, for now I direct your attention to this amusing 45 minute documentary on a class election in China. Yes, this is in China, an extremely authoritarian country, within their particularly creepy school system (in which I’ve taught incidentally), and yes, the teacher doesn’t do a particularly good job of making the thing very fair; but I would argue that there is no possible way that any election, or outcome, could be fundamentally different within the civilised system.
