Perhaps this is one of the 'possibilities' which Simplicius will be listing in a subsequent post, but I'm going to call it now: there will be no stalemate. The counter-offensive will run out of steam in a few weeks as predicted, and the Russian counter-counter-offensive will then steamroll the AFU and there will be Russian tanks in Kiev by the summer, if not further afield, even in other countries. Once the ball starts rolling on these things the tendency is for armies to continue until they hit a hard limit. Where is the next strong defensive line after the one NATO countries have been throwing everything at? I think Russia is done playing nice. Hope I'm wrong (I have family who fled a communist regime in eastern europe - no-one wants a repeat of that) but equally if Russia doesn't now press its advantage then it'll merely be saving up problems for itself further down the line. Where has playing nice got them so far? ... I suppose nowhere militarily, but it ensures their reputation in the court of public opinion (those not entranced by the lies of the western press) including the inhabitants of Ukraine who will be most probably be living under their rule in the years to follow.
