Never understood how so-called "serious" novelists such as Amis and McEwan who are highly regarded in the world of literature can bring themselves to accept gongs from the royal family. It immediately lessens their standing, shows their "radical" views to have been a sham, and demonstrates what grovelling toadies they really are. By contrast Alan Bennett, who must have been offered honours dozens of times, remains a common citizen, which at once burnishes and enhances his reputation and outstanding talent. Also a bit odd that a man who has just died can become a "Sir". Apparently he accepted the gong the day before he died. So no pride and integrity and true understanding of what matters in life even in death. No surprise though. |
