I think there were a whole generation of Tories who went through the war and learned a grudging respect for the working classes with whom they shared the privations of war. But, they also feared the example of the communist countries so knew they had to make concessions in order to avoid the more threatening ( to their position) option. They still believed in one nation, in society as an organic whole - albeit hierarchically organised. Thatcher challenged the whole idea of society as an organic whole in favour of atomised individuals competing against one another in the market place. This unleashed a whole generation of spivs and chancers who were purely motivated by self-interest. With the collapse of the Soviet Union (and thus a countervailing alternative), neoliberalism was further energised. It was the only game in town. Along with that went the assumption that the rest of the would have to accept the American-led neoliberal world order. Unipolarity. It is not just Russia and China that do not accept American hegemony. Whether the west likes it or not, it will have to learn to accept that other countries and cultures have to develop in their own way. There is no one model that fits all. Acceptance of multipolarity and multidiversity is the only way forward. Cooperation not dominance. Only through cooperation (while accepting differences) we will be able to go some way to avoiding the existential threats facing us all.
