Gain of function experiments whilst certainly happening are admissible because an old paradigm - get a illness and weaponise it. Molecular biology has advanced enormously in the last decade or two. The reports of US laboratories asking for synovium (knee joint tissue) from folks with Russian heritage suggests research to target specific populations with weapons, use of which would literally be genocidal. But the advent of CRISPR and related technology which allow editing of DNA is beyond the next level - targeting all Russians to sterilise them, or make them go blind or develop cancer. The wiki page doesn't list bioweapons as one of the uses of CRISPR but you can be sure that if I can think of it someone is experimenting with it. Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood has genetic editing of manufactured higher life forms and catastrophic use of virus bioweapons as its central theme. I can't remember if I enjoyed it enough to recommend but the US establishment seem to use her books as an instruction manual rather than a warning. I don't think CRISPR had been invented when that book was written. Don't know if I find that or Craig Murray's stories of hellish financialisation of our lives in the smallest detail more worrying.
