Ha, thought you meant 'we' as in humanity generally, in which case I was going to strongly object! I'm the wrong person to ask about weedkillers as I avoid them like the plague, but usually if you keep mowing or strimming (or scything, or grazing) an area the grasses will eventually take over as the broadleaf plants run out of energy to keep growing back while grass is capable of continual regrowth from the base of the plant as long as it's reasonably well established. The exceptions would be established perennial weeds like docks or dandelions or beasts like japanese knotweed which would need digging out or spraying. Wildflowers are trickier as they usually rely on low soil fertility in order to be competitive. If you've got an eruption of giant weeds that suggests to me the soil is quite fertile, helped along by all the rain we've been getting, so even if you get rid of the weeds the grass will smother them instead. Depleting the fertility is usually a long process of cutting & removing the grass as happens in traditional haymeadow management, or sometimes people completely strip the turf and a layer of the topsoil and then sow seed into the exposed soil. Always seemed a bit drastic to me... Hope that helps! I
