It's a big step to cast doubt on him at this sensitive moment, but Ritter certainly understood the gravity of that. It's possible that the cartel also reminded Lira that his family are within reach. He could be a very good guy but neutralised in the way Ritter suggests. Ritter's theory reminded me a bit of the strange trajectory of David Shayler.
