Every prominent nation has founding myths that can be bent to serve aggressive or imperial interests, I would humbly proffer. The damage the US has done since its foundation, I would say, has been more proportional to its economic power: At the outset, it could conquer only its own landmass. By the end of WW2, it could control half the world. The profound error in believing it could conquer the other half arose from the inconceivable notion that the second superpower had somehow ceased to exist. Hubris also involves the assumption of a static rival - the other side has no countervailing plan. Finally, being reactionary, the US waits to act until it is too late. Stupid is as stupid does.
