Crooke, an ex British diplomat who knows the region well, makes for sober and depressing reading. The ancient Greeks knew all about war and had the wealth and time to allow certain individuals the opprtunity, to know all about thinking. The tragedy is, that Nethanyahu and his war cabinet, know what they want and how to get it; even though they are the leadership of a small country that, objectively, has little importance for the United States. Israel could be wiped off the map and this wouldn't matter very much for the United States. What makes Israel so dangerous is that at least the regime has a plan, a strategy, going forward for dealing with the Palestinian problem, seen from their perspective. It may be incredibly dangerous, immoral and borderline insane, but it is what it is. In contrast, Washington has... nothing. No plan, no strategy at all. A great, rudderless supertanker with a senile Captain and a the officers on the bridge run around like headless chickens unable to plot a course. A great power without a proper leadership, can be steered by the far smaller Israel, simply because Israel, despite everything, has one crazy idea in its head, which, is 'better' than... nothing.
