It's very unlikely that the 30 quid dead-tree version contains something that the newer book doesn't though. As for scanning, I do it manually. A long, time consuming, irritating process. I used to be part of a card magic group on line and I sometimes scanned books over a thousand pages which would take five or six days of 12-14 hours days. Never again! But the odd book of 300 pages where you aren't too bothered about resolution (card magic books tend to have lots of pictures/drawings which need to be clear) I can still break out the old scanner.
