Subject: Extreme Heat at Work: A Critical Health and Safety Issue
Dear Quays
I am a regular visitor to the Quays and as such have been most concerned in the last few years regarding the health & safety of your staff re: heat/humidity esp. in your front-desk service booth. I have remarked to staff that they do have rights! Also, as a UNITE Community Member, I am aware that a union should be representing these workers and am most concerned that the rights of staff are being breached I, therefore, hope that the management will respond swiftly to my concerns as I will be raising the matter in council if they do not. Thank you.
regards Gerard Hales
What should my employer be doing? § Employers are duty-bound to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare at work of their employees (HASAW Act).
§ Employers must undertake risk assessments to identify hazards in the workplace, including climate change-related hazards such as heatwaves.
§ Measures to reduce the risk of harm to employees should be implemented. If conditions change, such as the risk of extreme temperatures, employers should review and update risk assessments accordingly.
§ Employers must protect staff who are particularly vulnerable to heat, potentially requiring individual risk assessments.
