Some very large hidden costs of doing an action.Archived Message

You never hear the first two mentioned:
1) You will probably lose your council flat if you get a prison sentence.
2) If you are of foreign nationality you may well be deported.
3) Also, the police will now have the right to search your home. So make sure you have nothing to hide. And that your flatmates, if any, know what to expect.
I say this because looking at some of the raggedy pieces of cardboard some people made their signs out of in that Parl. Sq. action (one guy had an Amazon box) I fear they jumped in on the spur of the moment without weighing things up and considering the cost or preparing. There's a lot of excitement at actions and bystanders can get sucked in. A sense of outrage can be a fierce motivator n make you do something impetuously that you regret later.
I speak as an embecile who was outraged at some particular bombing of Iraq shown on the TV, grabbed a spray can and set about painting "Stop bombing Iraq" on a facade outside Downing Street. When I was arrested I and the coppers discovered I had kindly brought with me credit cards, rent card and what have you. The police went off and photocopied the whole lot. So, don't do stuff on the spur of the moment. Stay calm and be prepared. Leave your phone at home so they can't go through your address book.
This is not criminal damage or highway obstruction here. The judge (under orders) could well throw the book at them to deter others. But, let's hope they'll be wary of filling up prison cells. We'll have to wait and see.
Anyway, let's hope they were all well prepared. The good thing is there were so many of them most were released that same evening. So there isn't a husband or wife waiting at home wondering where the fuck they've got to. Then again, of those who didn't get bail I wonder how many of them forgot to bring a recent household bill to prove their address. You never get bail if you can't prove your address.
Russian saying, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
