I had wondered about that myself. Another possibility is that with debt at historic levels in natoland Russia is hoping to topple nato economies by trapping them in a war which they will fight at a massive disadvantage in terms of economic efficiency. Ie. Military spending conducted via colossal rip-off fake competitive bids model..mega pork rather than central planning, then super Gucci gear sent to ukr with poor air cover to be burnt up by medium range missiles and drones.
