It wasn't my first reaction, which was more coldly cerebral, basically: "Here we go again, prominent white worthy victims take the limelight away from the murder of poor, brown children, rinse & repeat..." With limited empathic capacity, mine goes to the victims at the bottom of the hierarchy to the exclusion of those higher up, especially if they are complicit in the 'punching down' violence. Some say there shouldn't be limits on empathy or compassion.
