Canary forgot the bit about new 'left' media cut-outs that are nurtured to parallel and probably replace grassroots ventures. These are the cuckoo media that settle into existing nests of readers eager for progressive news. They eventually seem to dominate the space because they're better funded (mostly by USAID, American tech billionaires or the usual UK/EU think tanks). Because they evidently have resources, they are prolific; attuned to social media amplification; and shared more readily among establishment journalists and readers because they avoid taboo topics. |
Thus you have slick 'progressive' sites that have bobbed up (Byline Times, Double Down News, Novara, etcetera). They've gone from well-funded strength to strength - with cool hipster festivals (eg Byline) and bespoke televised options.
These sites cover some progressive issues and look good, on the face of it. But keep a sharp eye out for what they *don't* cover: who they punt (eg Monbiot, Cadwalladr); and what sorts of information they choose to double down on.
These sites are accompanied by fellow-travelling 'fact checkers' (professional sheen, 'impartial' vibe), which host blinkered 'propaganda specialist' behavioural psychologists and other 'exerts' on Zoom webinars ... and selectively fact-check only certain topics.
Think BBC Fact Checkers, First Draft News, Open Soc, Bellingcat, Africa Check, Reuters Foundation Oxford, etcetera
