The phrase "the Idiots of the North" is indicative of the real problem folk have with Labour

There was a much sharper (and, indeed, much shorter) analysis of the problem many have with Labour in a cartoon in 'Private Eye' - Labour canvasser turns up on the doorstep of a working class couple and asks them "So, why don't you racist fascists vote Labour then?" Lesson number one (the campaigning version of 'Don't march on Moscow') - you can't despise people, their views and values and expect them to keep voting for you. |
If Greenstein or anyone else wants to know why the 'Idiots of the North' didn't vote for Labour, why not get off his ass and go and ask them rather than speculating?
I also think his analysis of the 2019 election is wrong. People I spoke to who have voted Labour in the past but didn't at the last election simply didn't believe the manifesto - it had nothing to do with the machinations of the Labour right or the anti-semitism circus. Folk did not regard Corbyn as toxic - he was disliked for his perceived support of the IRA - but the real issue was that no-one thought he was competent.
