Bliar received fawning "celebrity" treatment in NZ, except on one occasion.

In March 2006, Bliar came to New Zealand. He was lionized by our abject political establishment and its media arm---with the exception of one interview, by Radio New Zealand's Eva Radich. She kept reminding him that his war on Iraq was illegal, and opposed by citizens everywhere, and he kept trying to slide away from her questions. She did not relent, however, and Blair was clearly rattled, albeit not losing his temper, unlike Jeffrey Archer when he came here in 1995, or William Shawcross on his 2004 visit. |
Instead of being praised for her tenacity and her professionalism, Eva Radich received either diplomatic silence from her Radio NZ colleagues, or indignant remonstrations from politicians and right wing commentators about being rude to such a distinguished guest. Many people called for her to be sacked for her unsophisticated display of lèse-majesté, but she survived, retiring ten years later.
A few years later, Blair returned to this country. They wouldn't let Eva Radich anywhere near him this time; instead he got the once-over-lightly treatment from our version of Barbara Walters. I managed to transcribe a little of the interview....
TONY BLAIR: I work in the Middle East peace process, as you know. ... Iran having the bomb is a very bad idea.
KIM HILL: [archly] And Israel having the bomb is a good idea?
BLIAR: I don't want to see military action against Iran, I really don't. You don't look on Israel as a threat to the region in the way that Iran is.
KIM HILL: Let me ask you this then---and I want an HONEST answer.
BLIAR: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
With Blair's mirthless laughter ringing in my ears, I sent the host of the program the following email....
Why did you not pursue that liar more vigilantly?
Tony Blair told a lot of outright fibs as well as sliding away from every pointed question you asked him. I think the most outrageous lie he told this morning was this: "I work in the Middle East peace process, as you know..."
Blair averred that Iran having the bomb was "a very bad idea", and you replied: "And Israel having the bomb is a good idea?" Without missing a beat, he said:"You don't look on Israel as a threat to the region in the way that Iran is."
Sadly, you didn't bother to follow up on that outrageous statement. Iran has invaded no other country for more than 2,500 years. Israel has invaded, in its short existence, Egypt, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza. It still occupies, bloodily and illegally, the West Bank and Gaza.
It's a pity that instead of continuing to challenge and pursue this notorious liar, you spent precious minutes on gossipy froth about his relationship with Gordon Brown.
