Watched this video essay recently which is sort of relevant. Basically the history of how saying 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' changed from absurdity to life advice.

Cooking -- or domestic science as it was known in my day -- is no longer part of the set school curriculum, so girls (and boys) don't have the skills necessary to cook food from basic ingredients. They rely on processed and pre-packaged food and have no need to cook anything. But that's the fault of governments over the last 25 to 30 years (or even longer) in that they haven't stipulated or required schools to teach it.

Of course cookery skills are of no use whatsoever if you can't afford to buy the basic ingredients in the first place. Cooking with an empty pan will not produce an enticing meal, unless you have a vivid imagination.

It will cost the UK taxpayer £132bn to decommission all the UK’s civil nuclear sites and the work will not be completed for another 120 years, according to latest estimates.

Dumbing down or deskilling people serves the multinationals well: it's created a market worth about £4 Billion because the UK eats half of Europe's ready meals.
Its typical though to hear a Tory complain about something they have long encouraged.

The lack of a strong UK tradition of cooking is I suppose in origin the effect of both the Agricultural and the Industrial revolutions clearing people from a direct connection to the land, entailing the subsequent generational loss of their own distinct peasant skills.

Quite - fwacking up our society, then blaming us for the predictable consequences.

I think it's maybe as much an issue of time poverty as it is lack of cooking skills - you need the time to learn the cooking skills, prepping, soaking stuff etc etc. I know I'm often too fwacked to do anything but chuck something from the freezer in the oven when I finish work (the laziness doesn't help either - can i blame that on the Tories too? (yeah, let's call it alienation or something

)

Me too - he came up in my algorithm a few weeks ago - I've seen a few others in his channel I've enjoyed too - eg this one was good (but grim)
