‘Defenders of Mariupol are the heroes of our time’: the battle that gripped the world
Surrounded and bombarded by Russian troops, the ‘apocalyptic’ siege that defined the brutality of Putin’s war appears over

Bad Russia attempting to hold nazi war criminals to account:
'Duma appears to be trying to prevent Azovstal soldiers to be part of prisoner swap
The Russian state Duma appears to be moving toward trying to prevent Ukrainian soldiers from the Azov battalion being included in any prisoner swap.
The Azov Regiment, a one-time nationalist militia integrated into Ukraine’s National Guard, has been alleged by Moscow to be the main perpetrator of anti-Russian nationalism from which Russia has claimed it needs to protect Ukraine’s Russian-speakers from.
Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the State Duma, said its members were “Nazi criminals” who should not be included in prisoner exchanges. “They are war criminals and we must do everything to bring them to justice,” he said.
Reuters reports the Duma website said he had asked the defence and security committees to prepare an instruction to that effect.
At the same time, the Telegram channel of the RIA news agency is carrying this short news snap, citing Russia’s justice ministry:
'Biletsky was the head of an openly racist Patriot of Ukraine group which was involved in hate crimes against minorities, and later formed the core of the infamous Azov volunteer battalion, which uses neo-Nazi symbolism. He was celebrated as commander of the Azov battalion and assigned to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the police. Biletsky is not the only neo-Nazi recently appointed to law enforcement bodies. In October, Vadym Troyan, another Patriot of Ukraine member and deputy commander of the Azov battalion, was appointed as the head of the police in Kiev Oblast province.' - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/nov/13/ukraine-far-right-fascism-mps
Kath Viner must have sent round a memo... Shades of Reagan referring to the contras as 'the moral equivalent of our founding fathers'. One to remember for when the inevitable terrorist atrocity perpetrated by a right wing lunatic trained and armed in Ukraine comes back to haunt a European or UK city. You know it's coming...
That is surely inspired by the Karl Malden shot in the hold of the ship in that film.
Interesting that there are tons of pictures and not much text until you get near the bottom when this appears:
Last week more than 1,000 soldiers of Ukraine’s 36th marine brigade, including scores of officers and several Britons fighting in the city, surrendered.
Other members of the same unit, who held on inside the Azovstal steel plant along with members of the Azov brigade and more than 1,000 civilians, were clear they could not hold out much longer, outnumbered 10 to one and with no hope of relief.
So Marines, "brits" and oh yeh, members of the Azov brigade, like it's some after thought and a LOAD of civilians. Pay no attention to the nazi bit in the middle or the "brits" for that matter.
Every time you think they can't sink lower, there they go. ...no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.
What were these 1,000 civilians if not hostages or human shields, as has long been alleged by Azov's critics?
I see Beaumont also uses the "they use to have some nazis but now they're all good" bit:
'The capture of Mariupol loomed large in the Kremlin’s imagination for propaganda purposes too: as the home base of the Azov brigade, which at its 2014 inception, when the war in Donbas began, included far-right volunteers, some with neo-Nazi affiliations. (In recent years the brigade has been fully integrated into the Ukrainian military).'
Rather a big assumption that 'full integration' into the Ukrainian military meant they stopped being nazis, as opposed to the likely opposite that the Ukraine military was futher nazified by the inclusion of these psycho mercenaries. Didn't they adopt the Bandera slogan 'slava ukraini' shortly after? The one we hear at pro-ukraine protests, U2's Kiev performance and even f*ing Eurovision.
Also the nerve of Beaumont to compare this to the siege of Stalingrad is quite breathtaking:
'Inverting history, the steelworks has become to Mariupol what the factory district was for Stalingrad’s Russian defenders, even as the Kremlin claimed prematurely, on several occasions, to have taken it.
But unlike Stalingrad, which could be resupplied across the Volga river, the Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol have been cut off from resupply by the surrounding Russian forces and also by their naval blockade of the Black and Azov seas.'
Yes Beaumont, you inverted history there, but not in the way you think you did!
Ukraine says rescue under way at Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol
"Rescue" ? So...now they've been "Rescued" now....by, em... the Russians & from, um...those nasty umm...Russians that surrounded them!
Where's the editor....? Oh right...Chatham house. It's reached the seriously delusional.
-Oh well. If defeat and surrender means "rescued", then at least it confirms what we all reckoned. Using this as a gauge of honesty, the truth about events in Ukraine are indeed very likely to be the very opposite of what we read in the Corporate media.
Ghost of Kiev: The flying Turkey. Snake Island Alamo: We all Surrender. Azovstal Rescue: Nazi Turkeys all surrender too.
When they win the war Ukraine can have a victory parade with themed floats on these heroic legendary events in its history.
