The role of these shows within the BBC's wider mission is discussed here: |
Scroll down to the bit that starts "... the modern BBC is inextricably embedded in a class of wealthy, well-connected and influential people who, being so heavily invested in ‘nothing changing very much’, will know perfectly well that the BBC must remain the thing it is today: a vast, multi-media entertainment corporation attached to a world-class and world-spanning propaganda apparatus. After all, its maximum value within the modern media-political-corporate complex requires both these parts to be not simply present, but actually integrated with each other: the ‘entertainment’ part draws people in and creates an audience with ‘brand loyalty’ and ‘trust’; the ‘bent news’ part supplies the approved narratives and establishes the official demonology — at which point ‘entertainment’ can take over again and reinforce the necessary misinformation by way of ‘fun’ programming that takes completely for granted what have now become ‘facts about X that everyone knows‘. If you want a word for it, you can call it ‘bentertainment’."
