...and its not just the SNP btw. Most Green, Lib and Labour MSPs voted for this bullshit bill, as did some Tories.

- The entire body politic is obsessed with an issue that is important only to a fraction of one percent of the population. Course our representatives would rather focus on this than do something real in terms of equality: both health and wealth, for the majority of the population which would after all, cost money.
So... we get instead a diversion into meaningless cul-de-sac of identity issues, moral posturing and legislative tokenism which is not only ill thought out but lacks even a modicum of rationality.

And this was always going happen, male rapists and sexual predators were going to self ID as women to exploit the system, as you say, the SNP and Greens voted against amendments that would have stopped this from happening, utter insanity.

Interesting, I have only been mildly aware of this matter from NZ I do check out Bella Caledonia sometimes I didn't know that an obvious issue, predatory men in women's spaces, prisons wherever, was discussed but actually vetoed. I am a Green party member in NZ and for the most part I'm proud of their philosophy, but there's no doubt in these more peripheral issues, a few very vocal and difficult people, men or women, can all too successfully hijack policy leaving far too many otherwise enthusiastic green members bewildered and betrayed. I imagine this must be happening in Germany with the Green leadership's militarism and Russophobia.

To be fair to Sturgeon the problem was not about female transmen in male prisons, and this question was being asked just to confuse the discussion. She was right to brush that aside. It does seem that she is at last seeing the difficulties of her legislation , she is a pretty canny political operator, and she will modify the law or instructions to the justice system to prevent the worst outcomes of the legislation. Whether that's enough to appease the critics i don't know.

Distractions from more important economic issues work both ways - culture wars suit both sides of the political/media establishment just fine for that very reason seems to me. Culture wars - the only winning move is not to play.

While I think it's a given that our politicians are largely deranged, I've wondered whether the SNP's trans lunacy is actually more about cynically exploiting this issue in order to force a constitutional crisis. Is perhaps the intention to force Parliament to block the Gender Recognition Act thereby giving Sturgeon the opportunity to say "see, we have no autonomy under the present arrangements, we need independence now"?

Na. Sturgeon has no real interest in Independence. She's a Devolutionist posing as a Nationalist. Her whole idea that Scotland needs Section 30 permission from the UK parliament to hold a legitimate Independence Referendum makes it clear that she has no serious interest in Scottish Independence at all simply because that permission will never be given. The can will be kicked down the road...and she will end up earning a fortune pontificating on some nonsense or other as the well remunerated leader of some US(Democrat CIA) funded NGO for some other kind of "rights".

A leader handed everything on a plate it was hard for her to go wrong...but she managed to turn it all into shit. That takes "talent" of a particular kind.
