Simplicius: SITREP 16 March 2023: Reaper Developments And Major Advances

Fast moving objects can appear deformed due to a camera sensor phenomenon called "rolling shutter". As each row of pixels is read out sequentially, a delay is introduced and as the object moves, a skewing effect of the object is recorded.

This can be avoided by reading the pixel rows simultaneously, but stacked sensors are much more expensive, let alone the grail of "global shutter".

Is this why a Spitfire roaring by seems to have a windmilling propeller?

That's an optical illusion where the apparent rotation of the spoked object appears to rotate differently (speed and direction) from the reality.

The rolling shutter causes skewing of objects. It can be seen in car/bike races where vertical structures (stands, flagpoles) appear as diagonals.

Recte: Not quite skewed as diagonals but as lines inclined from the vertical (nm)

I vaguely remember taking a shot of propellers, in flight, way back, and getting the same 'skewed' effect. I thought of it immediately after seeing it at first, but then got swayed by others.

No, it's when a propeller rotates slowly in the slipsteam, because it isn't feathered.
