I think the Greens, across Europe should emphatically condemn this proposed British action, on environmental grounds alone, if they can't be bothered to do the brainwork to do it on other grounds.

Thunberg could point out that the single most wasteful and environmentally damaging institution we've created, is the military, and that, arguably the single biggest polluter on the planet is the US military. So, if one did want to do something radical and effective to 'save the planet', and it's a low hanging fruit, one should actively oppose military spending.

Most of the Greens though, seem oddly reluctant to take a firm position on any of this. Appart from the Irish Greens. Why is that?

I'd like to see Lukas, the single Green MP in Westminster condemn the UK government for planning to send uranium ammunition to Ukraine, or any of that Labour shower, who pretend to be on the left.

Let me fix that ...

Uranium - and Greens/Thunberg all oppose nuclear power(fission) on which nuke weapons depend.. but don't oppose the existing fissile arsenal or use of hydrogen (fusion) bomb. Got it!

And as DJ mentions, they don't oppose the military which is the biggest polluter in the world that has this arsenal at their disposal.

If we don't get rid of the nuclear weapons soon, we shan't have any climate to worry about. Mum Gaeia might choose a different evolutionary path for its creatures thereafter.

I used to vote for UK Greens after leaving LP (just to stick it to the latter : )). Not any more - waste of vote. I am seriously looking at the Monster Raving Loony Party manicfesto at the mo. Needs studying.

Although I have been an opponent of the nuclear power for yonks, in this particular case, pragmatically, I agree with her sentiments about continuing the use of them as opposed to going back to coal for obvious reasons. Cart before the horse and all that. The worry is that this just may create complacency about phasing out nuclear power in the long term. Weeding out should be done on a case by case basis, looking at the objective safety records for each plant.

Btw, I noticed that there are more *live* decarbonising of coal plants projects ongoing at the mo. Normally I would dismiss these as 'technofix' lala land if it was uttered by non-techies. But then, since we are talking about a lot of money involved in these, I do wonder how much corruption this entails. Don't know enough at the mo to make a judgement. Watch this space.

The Greens in Germany have been 'captured' by the hegemon. In a sense, this is also true for in the UK - the 'official' Greens, that is.

To a certain extent I can understand Christoforous's dismissal of the St Greta meme. She ain't Dalai Lama but is getting there. She obviously tripped on the warmongering part with Ukraine. Christoforou doesn't explain the details and places it in his haha compartment, which is something he does on his walkabouts. One reason for me not posting his vids. My main point in posting this particular vid was to highlight the clip with the speech in the beginning – and I don’t to video clipping.

I think Ritter is right. Let’s get rid of nuclear weapons first (at the same time as depleted uranium, cluster bombs .. shrinking the militaries etc.)

There might be a pragmatic case to make, but I don't think she should be the one making it, that's just a gift to the industry and undermines her own credibility for nothing. In a sane world these 'bridge fuel' arguments might have some merit, but the logic of capitalism dictates that growth must be pursued in all sectors at the maximum possible rate, so it's never nuclear OR coal; fracked gas/renewables(sic)/hydrogen/sodium batteries OR coal - it's ~ AND coal (Germany was already burning coal before the Ukraine war). Taking up the task of deciding which is the best, or even least worst, fuel for industrial capitalism in that situation is merely deciding which of those industrial sectors you're going to give free PR to. Agreed on Christoforous. I'm in two minds about it, as you can maybe tell from my contradictory arguments! On the one hand I hate the centrist dad-type dismissal of Thunberg, calling her Joan of Arc and refusing to engage with anything she actually says; on the other hand her relative acceptance by the mainstream does indicate that the wheels are in motion to co-opt climate change-focused environmentalism and use it to ram through the next round of authoritarian measures a-la covid, if not to the extent that some might imagine it...

The Putin clip was worth it though, so thanks for that!

The reason I was making that (pragmatic) argument is because of not wanting to stress the working people and at the same time making an assumption that all the caveats (as to how decarbonising is to be accomplished thereafter) are taken into account, which is a big if, since we have a systemic problem i.e. capitalism. Whether Greta made a PR blunder, according to deep greens, may be debatable, and ultimately it is not for me to judge.

I had a couple of interviews with engineering companies recently where this was mentioned as being as part of their portfolio/s. They obviously would not tell me which countries are considering it, or any other details. Since these were large and 'reputable' companies I take it as given that this work is ongoing (early stages of design) and is likely to be built at some point.

The last point I made about nuclear weapons is the most important one for me, and something that needs to be tackled first imo. Like I said, it's pointless to worry about the climate if we are all going to be dead (apart from the microbes and such). The rest can follow ..

Thunberg's strength is in making the general case for societal change based on climate science and in calling out phoney greenwash 'solutions'. Haven't seen her advocate any specific programs, other than generic rewilding/tree planting 'natural solutions', in cahoots with 'my friend George':

But, as we saw with the Gilets Jaunes and lately with the Dutch farmers, if efforts to change aren't made equitably then it's a recipe for (justified) class outrage. Ultimately, any serious attempts to decarbonise society, including the degrowth that has to happen in order to bring us back within planetary limits, is going to be massively painful, including for working people, there's no getting around it unfortunately. That's why I don't think it's ever going to happen as part of government programs, and the issue is going to be forced by peak oil and societal collapse. To be honest, I expect that would lead to better outcomes for ordinary people than if the elites & out-of-touch professional classes try to enforce the policies they'd like to see (while holding on to their wealth & privileges) - though it will prob need a revolution to stop collapse also leading to further elite retrenchment & neo-feudalism...

Thanks for the inside scoop on the coal / carbon capture stuff. I can't imagine how it's ever going to work, except as more greenwash, but interesting to hear they're pushing ahead with it. Agreed on getting rid of the nukes.
