Poor deluded Finland. I have friends in Finland, I warned them this was stupid and would make their security less. They were in two minds but the fear of Russia outweighed their common sense and they've bought into the paranoia.
Finland lost a war with Russia in 1940. They were forced to come to terms, they lost a lot of land in Karelia, and even had to accommodate a Russian naval base just 20 kms from Helsinki. The base was returned to Finland in the '50s. Yet the Russians kept their side of the bargain, and Finland has prospered as the "world's happiest country".
They've thrown that away. A young and callow PM has led this change of Finland from a tolerated and quiet neighbour to a threatening and war-like enemy. Because membership of NATO will mean NATO (i.e. US) missiles and military equipment installed on your land.
Finland is insane. If you're a flock of sheep living happily on the edge of the forest, you don't go out of your way to provoke the bear who's forest it is and who has previously left you alone. .
Re: Finland joins the world's deadliest gangster regime.
Agree with that sentiment John. It's a shame that Finn's paranoia has won the day. I do wonder if they had a referendum on this or whether the ruling elite has made that decision without consulting the plebs. Don't know enough.
This has just placed giant bulls-eyes on their population centres, if and when they deploy nuke missiles on their soil.
It is hoped that NATO will wither after SMO, and good riddance. Still murky.
Re: Finland joins the world's deadliest gangster regime.
I don't think they've had a referendum. It was considered, but repeated polling indicated a greater than 60% support to join NATO and their MPs were "overwhelmingly" in favour. A simple parliamentary vote was all that was required.
