Doctorow: Cheerleading versus shivers down your spine ..

.. what will the coming Ukrainian counter-offensive bring?
He is dissenting from the the views of Ritter and Macgregor that RF is winning .. and RF will therefore resort to nukes. Meep .. bit of an outlier I guess .
"...These folks are playing the Grand Chessboard, and their logic is ‘you cannot make an omelet without breaking eggs,’ by which I mean that the losses of the combatant sides are merely collateral damage in a much needed realignment of the World Order that takes America down from its pedestal. Quite apart from the cynicism that underlies such position-taking..."
A pirouetting reversal of the truth considering that the "Grand Chessboard" was developed years with the very purpose of keeping America on its pedestal. One of their favourite strategists, Russian hating Polish American "Biggy" Brzeziński 26 years ago even named his book dealing with exactly this: "The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and its Geostrategic Imperatives" ffs...
-Interestingly enough "Biggy"wasn't quite as stupid as the present lot. Here's a pertinent quote:
"...a coalition allying Russia with both China and Iran can develop only if the United States is shortsighted enough to antagonize China and Iran simultaneously.”
-Now, there's the hubris that will lead to nemesis.
Re: Doctorow: Cheerleading versus shivers down your spine ..
I didn't find his reasoning for why Ritter et. al. are wrong very convincing, i.e. "nobody knows what the situation on the ground WILL BE when the Ukrainians launch their counter offensive next month" which has nothing to do with what Ritter et. al. have been saying (the situation NOW not predictions of the future).
It also seems to go against his later assertion that everyone is keeping everything under wraps so nobody knows anything about plans, except he's now certain that there will be a UKR counter-offensive next month.
His hypothetical leading to tactical nuclear use by Russia isn't too far fetched although there are other scenarios that could easily occur including the neo-con psychos coming up with some brilliant plan to blame Russia for something they do.
That aside, it does seem that the main point of his article is to call for a cease fire which is probably the best we can hope for....no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.

Yes but he is right to point out in war there can be no certainties. Ritter's certainties are very persuasive, but he might, at the end of the day, be wrong. The US may well have provided some pretty deadly long range weaponry that will severely test Russian resolve and their military machine.
