I wrote something here of much the same opinion in 2010 in my blog, and possibly in the then Media Lens pages,, in the general sense that we're seeing the same geo-strategic games playing out. I noted the parallels between the first decade or two of this century with those of the last. Failing powers in a wider world of deep social and technological change; powers, and I'm particularly thinking of the US, desperate to preserve a status quo that is no longer a rational way of doing things, basically the last "hurrah" of a 200 year history of capitalism and a 400 year history of western dominance. In 2014 it was the failing monarchies of Europe that had come to the end of their natural lives. We've gone our way to war a bit differently, having the pandemic as a curtain raiser rather than the final act.
