Hi everyone,

I have just received the sad news that Rhis passed away on his boat sometime last night or this morning (May 20-21). It seems that the extra exertion required to get back to his boat, toegther with his already weakened state, might have triggered a stroke which caused him to fall and hit his head. He was discovered by his family today.

Apparently his last conversation yesterday was to stress how much he appreciated all of the messages that everyone here has sent him, and how loved he felt as a result. He also told his partner that he intended to log on to 5F last night to say hello, and that he had come to realise that covid was a far worse disease than he had thought it was, and he regretted his earlier attitude towards it.

I will let everyone here know about how the family is planning to handle the funeral arrangements etc. Perhaps we should arrange a 5F meetup at some point to celebrate what a presence he has been in our lives all these years.

Sorry to be the bearer of such sad news.

Rhisiart was a kind and supportive online friend to me for 20 years or more. He believed many things that I do not but one could always have a good discussion with him.

Thank you for the photo. I think he had said that he was once an actor and he looks like one. Very handsome.

He seemed to live life in his own terms and for that, much respect.

It would be great if his soul met up with my son’s in the great beyond. They would get on like a house afire.

I popped over to 5F on Sunday and there was talk of him getting back to the boat and things were looking up etc. Thought of sending him an email tonight and then this. Good man, and in fact an extraordinary person, has left us. At least he became cognisant of the fact that covid was no small matter for elderly fwiw. RIP

He brought a real literary style to the boards he posted on. A character you could relate to, living in a world he had described to you.

He was the most prolific contributor to this board and ML before that. 'The Welsh Windbag' to his sparring partners, and a treasured commentator to his followers, no-one could beat the care and attention he devoted to his posts.

Unsentimental. Warm. Honest.

That's terribly sad. He was one of those who was always willing to interact with good will and good humour. Going back to the days of the mlmb I always liked Rhys. I really will miss him.

Feel the same, Sir MM. Thanks for posting that message with the pic, Ken. Exchanged a few emails with him years ago and he always came across as a warm, noble, generous soul. A true Celtic warrior. Missed his presence here when he left this board as I enjoyed his turn of phrase and rare insights. He used to go on about Tom Campbell´s metaphysical´Big TOE´ theory a lot which describes, if I remember rightly subjective reality and one consciousness...if that´s the case (and it seems to be!), he hasn´t really left us.

V. sad news, especially as it sounded like he might have been on the mend, having got out of hospital and back to his houseboat. Legend... I remember back in the old MLMB days being excited to find in him somebody who had joined the dots between the critiques of capitalism and corp.media and with the environmental crises and even peak oil. A rarity to have somebody of his generation still so switched on and open to new information (albeit sometimes too open, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to point out) He wrote frankly and without apparent fear about death on a number of occasions, which I found inspiring and helpful. OTOH, once you accept the high likelihood of re-incarnation, time after time, with the aim built in to the process of always striving to do things better next time than you managed last time, death seems - well, actually quite welcome, whenever it comes; especially when you get to that late stage where you think: 'Why am I lingering on like this, when all the means to make much of the time that's left have pretty much evaporated? Why not just quit this particular packet of life-experience and go and get re-born into the next one, all brand new, as someone quite different, according to what the pure happenstance of conception throws up?'

Apart from a certain residual animal apprehension, built in by evolution to our instinctual programming, I can't think of much of an objection, these days, to that insistent prompting. Pity that easy, reasonably dignified methods of self-release are made so difficult to lay hands on these days, by our really seriously weird attitudes - in the modern West - to death.

I don't see me spending several thousand pounds just to go to Dignitas in Switzerland, to get that release. My younger family members need that money too urgently in their own full-on here-and-now life struggles to justify such self-indulgence on my part.

My mam, at the end of her life, was lucky in her GP. When she asked him about ending it all, he wasn't one of the flinching ones who can't handle such requests - as mine is now. He just told her that she already had the means in her hand, in the sleeping draught that he'd prescribed her previously. He said: 'My dear, it's quite simple: The sleeping draught on your bedside table will do it. The rule is: One tot for a good night's sleep; two tots not to wake up again in the morning.'

As it happened, she never made use of this advice. But she gained comfort from knowing that the solution to the painful time she suffered at the end of life was right there to hand, if she ever made the fateful decision.

With all the insights that the near-death researchers, and the OOBE researchers, have amassed recently, it's become really pretty obvious that the reductive, mechanistic nihilism of modern Western thinking on the matter of death is wholly inadequate to explain to ourselves what really happens; and how - clearly - Juliet's nurse gets it wrong when she says to Romeo: "Oh sir, sir; death's the end of all!" On the contrary, as the ancient wisdom traditions concur, it's really just the gateway to what comes next. And that may involve some Purgation, sure, as is only right; but, it seems, not eternal damnation. And then you get to go round again; and again; and again; with a chance to do better each time...

Thanks Ian for those wise words from Rhis, so pertinent now. I think I've downplayed in my mind how influential he was for me in my 20s in the days of the MLMB. As you say, it was exciting to read someone who'd connected the dots across many aspects of life and to do so with such humour and integrity. Such individuals are few and far between. Of course he did get things wrong but as he admitted himself, we all have our blindspots. He could also be a skilled wind-up merchant and I can understand how some were rubbed up the wrong way by him. Still, reading through this thread, I'm reminded of his many witticisms that have slipped into our lexicon and how he genuinely connected with so many of us.

I was hoping to hear a bit of good news about Rhys some day on here, like he had recovered well and was back on his boat.
Very sad to have checked the board in the early hours this morning and find this.
I had known Rhys for many years through the old MLMB and The Lifeboat and we would message each other.
Made him laugh a few times when I would joke with him about all his gold!
RIP Rhys, you were one of the good ones!

I would have liked to have met you, Rhys, but not to be. You were an integral part of this forum for a long, long time, may be more like the sand at times than the cogs, but still you have been missed by this antipodean.Your contributions could never be taken for granted, and in your sometimes confrontational writing, there was always a heartfelt honesty and some challenging insights. It's very sad that my re-acquaintance with you on this forum is to learn of your passing. There'll be more peace and less contention for you now, it's our job in your memory to try end ensure that peaces and contentment come closer to our own abode and in our own time. RIP.

John, that was a nice tribute to Rhys and your closing sentence caused me to reflect - as I often do - on why disputes amongst those who would regard themselves as being on the left (although I increasingly feel that 'left' and 'right' no longer have much meaning) are often so very bitter.

Why is it that there is often so much difficulty in believing that people of goodwill and integrity can look at matters and come to a different conclusion about them to ours? I've seen it on this board a zillion times - feminism, Brexit, Covid, climate change to name but a few have produced much rancour with people often withdrawing from further engagement after particularly vicious spats.

It's often said that if you disagree with a right-winger, they simply believe you are wrong whereas left-wingers believe those who disagree with them are evil. Could that be at least partially true?

If you disagree with a right winger its unimportant to them because he/she is in charge or generally supports the elite establishment anyway and will prevail.
If your views become a nuisance there's no need to disagree: you will be smeared, sacked, imprisoned or taken out: that's the evil bit.

Brings to mind that cartoon meme about the guy sitting up all night at the screen "...because someone is wrong on the internet"...
But there again on the other side you have the "cherished belief" where people often identify with their views so intensely that any criticism on a particular subject tends to be perceived as an attack on themselves personally.

No matter how rational the criticism may be its read on an emotional level and taken as a personal slight.
Of course there's an element of religion in the views we identify with: "believe/ think" Everyone wants to remain true to their narrative and no-one wants to become an apostate to their former selves.
As JK Galbraith famously put it:
" Faced with the choice between changing one’s mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.'

Its notable that the meat of the two disruptions: Medialens and Lifeboat both have been over the credibility of a proposed overarching conspiracy: 9/11 and Covid.

The reason the split came about with Medialens is that some of the more way-out views of individuals on the Message Board (As anyone can post anything its the Achilles heel of any public message board) were dishonestly being used to typify the views of the Medialens team itself: A classic technique of discrediting an opponent thrugh smear by association that goes all the way back to Whitaker & Baxters use of quotes from the mouths of the novel characters Upton Sinclair in his thirties run for Governor of California.

In the case of Lifeboat you cant really expect to make the same repeated conspiracy assertions on a message board when its administrator is not only a specialist in the area of contention but also a front-face worker in the field seeing every day that you are wrong in a very graphic and deadly way.

I missed Rhis on this site for his breadth rather than his occasional misjudgments. He had an eclectic thirst and passion for knowledge born from a love of the natural world that seemed unquenchable. He was an excellent writer with a unique style rarely seen and of course he was a memorable wordsmith with some unforgettable coinings. His term for the elite: GIC's "Gangsters In Charge" will remain one of my favourites as will "Permanent Bullshit Blizzard" for the unending ordure they try bury the truth under.

Sad news that one of the great characters from the days of the ML message board, Rhisiart Gwilym, has died. The web often blurs and obscures individuality. RhG's character blazed forth from his brilliantly written posts.

From MLMB to LBN to 5F there have certainly been bifurcations over the years. Many fall-outs, departures, returns.

I seem to remember Rhis got into trouble on MLMB for his 9/11 Posts. Then, of course, his departure from LBN over disagreements over Covid.

And a lot of others left LBN over Covid.

That's the way of things, I guess.

We all try to negotiate this mad world in the best way we can according to our lights.

So very sad to hear of Rhisiart’s passing. Amongst a great cast of contributors at the old ML message board, and later Lifeboat News, there was no greater character than the larger-than-life and free-spirited Rhis. I still have many fond memories of his epic contributions and exchanges, wonderful use of language and colourful denunciations of the power elite.

Must go digging at the old Forum to retrieve some of his sage and expansive commentary 🙂

Condolences to his family and best wishes to all at Lifeboat News.

We exchanged quite a few private messages on this board and the MLMB and Rhys always took extreme care and unstinting time to discuss whatever subject you brought up. A lovely bloke I feel I knew personally though we never met.

RG had a good heart.

Could have gone for "We had vehement disagreements but I'm sorry to hear he died" but no, you had to just come in and shit on him. Spare us the "I don't do pieties" line; there are ways to say we didn't agree and I really hated some of the things he said without being bitter and insulting. It says more about you than him and none of it good.

'Public menace'? Can't see how you can justify such an extreme accusation. By not taking the vaccine? By not accepting lockdowns? By challenging government/pharma propaganda on tiny backwaters of the internet? Even if he was 100% wrong on all of it and the official line was 100% correct, he's just one guy with a very limited platform - unless you want to argue that he became some kind of super-spreader as a consequence (from his houseboat??). Anyway you're at liberty to disagree and reveal his arguments as lacking in substance, as many on this forum did, me included, esp when he started entertaining climate change skeptic talking points.

I think you've got your priorities wrong if you're viewing individuals, rather than the governing institutions, as the real 'menace' to the 'public', whatever that word even means any more...

I'd agree it's not the place or time for it.

Thing is, and I'm not addressing this to anyone in particular, once the side barbs go in, people start remembering the different sides, the group dynamics, the campaign, the operators etc and now is not the time for Rhys to be remembered in that context.

No, I wrote that Doran's criticisms were in the wrong discussion (hence my condolences post) but they were true, which is an honest comment. I'd probably be more swingeing in a discussion of Rhisiart's failings.
