This is close to kitsch parody, maybe it is? A lefty time warp, where they imagine the war in Ukraine is somehow a vulgar re-run of the Spanish Civil War. Ha, ha, ha! And they wonder why the left is brain dead. An incredible opportunity to tell the truth about events in Ukraine, instead they run with the West's cartoon version.

The Donbas loyalists are the Republicans in this story. How can the Canary be so corrupt?Clio the cat, ? July 1997 - 1 May 2016 Kira the cat, ? ? 2010 - 3 August 2018 Jasper the Ruffian cat ? ? ? - 4 November 2021
Joe Glenton: Picking NATO over Russia, or vice versa, is a fool's game. Choose people, not power.
"Trotskyism's" value was never really down to what it could do for the strength of the left, on the contrary, it only split the left into various mutually antagonistic "religious" factions that weakened and undermined the left, and, paradoxically helped the Establishment in the West to divide and rule. The "Troskyist" scourge still has a role to play in colouring how many sects and individuals perceive the current conflict between NATO and Russia, which they absurdly imagine is plucky little Ukraine, progressive/left Ukraine, against an imperialistic Russia.
I haven't been following what has happened with The Canary since Kerry-Anne Mendoza was overthrown by her journalists (who formed a co-op) in 2021, and this after antisemitism campaign against Mendoza in 2020. So, are you saying that The Canary Co-op is a Trotskyite org now, DJ?
Sad to see idealistic young people suckered into this bloodbath, thinking it's like Spain vs. the Nazis.
Makes you wonder where they got their information from. I note two of them were in Rojava before going to fight in Ukraine. The US military and intel was/is supportive of that celebrated 'social experiment' and the associated YPG to suit its aims in Syria and possibly Turkey as well. It doesn't sound like any of them spent time in conflicts where western powers were the aggressor, which would undoubtedly have given a different perspective. In another article one Russian dissident calls leftists who 'support' Putin 'idiots' because:
But I've always understood that Russia will have its own geopolitical interests that it will be advancing through the war, which is why I don't 'support' either side. However it's clear that NATO and the US finally hitting hard limits to their hegemonic expansion is a very good thing, potentially for millions around the globe. Liberation movements will likely be far more successful as a result if they're able to play the different power blocks off eachother rather than simply getting squashed by the dominant US imperialism. If you go into conflict zones with naive ideas about 'supporting the struggle of the people' without any analysis of how you might be getting used as a pawn in a great power game (or indeed, any reflection about why you've chosen these people to defend, instead of countless others facing similar atrocities) then it's difficult to see how your actions are going to have any positive benefit.
Garbage from the Canary to present these people as heroes or martyrs for others to emulate without making any effort to examine this simplistic & ultimately propagandistic narrative. It's Paul Mason level stuff.
As one comment observed.... "Over 100k followers, 48k views and only 17 likes in 5 days. Not often you see a media outlet so spectacularly out of step with its readership".
These claims appear to be circulating based on two Facebook posts - our editorial standards are much higher, and we don’t base our analysis on random social media posts
The Resistance Committee, who the three men organised with, said “Recently, we received information that some political fraudsters are trying to make a PR campaign out of the deaths of our comrades, attributing to them actions or motives that were not theirs.”
Dmytro, Finbar, and Cooper’s politics and legacies speak for themselves -
https://t.me/SolidarityCollectives/509 [Quote tweet] Finbar Cafferkey who died resisting the Russian invasion of Ukraine Apr19 was a friend & comrade who for the two decades I knew him consistently put himself in harms way to oppose injustice. Whether that was fighting Shell or ISIS or going to Kos to help refugees come ashore/1
For the record, our coverage on Russia and Ukraine has been consistent no matter who has been overseeing our editorial policies
Picking NATO over Russia, or vice versa, is a fool’s game. Choose people, not power. Good luck figuring out who the good guy is between Russia and NATO. We'll be doing solidarity for people, not power.
It is morally repugnant to align these anti-fascists with Nazism. As we said before, we understand that Western imperialism and Russian imperialism must be steadfastly resisted - we’re against authoritarian states, always have been and always will be
People over power, always
And for good measure: 'Who can reply? People @TheCanaryUK mentioned can reply'
Trying to silence opposition from their own readers, not a good look. And clutching their pearls over 'morally repugnant' comments linking these people to Nazis? Give it a rest - they aligned themselves with a military that has openly fascist battalions. To point that out is simply factual.Tell your story; Ask a question; Interpret generously http://storybythethroat.wordpress.com/tell-ask-listen/

I think deluded is the word I was thinking of. It's like saying black is white and trying to get away with it. Only in their minds : )
