Labour blocks sitting left-wing mayor Jamie Driscoll from standing for new North East role

Sky News understands Mr Driscoll's candidacy was refused because he recently appeared at an event with the film director Ken Loach, who was expelled from the party in 2021 for claiming there had been a "purge" and "witch hunt" of Jeremy Corbyn supporters under Sir Keir Starmer's leadership.

At the time of the event in March, Mr Driscoll said: "I spoke with Ken Loach as part of the Live Theatre's 50th anniversary celebrations. Mr Loach has chosen the North East as a location for his most recent film 'The Old Oak' as well as his previous films, Sorry We Missed You and I, Daniel Blake. During the event, we participated in a lively and engaging discussion about his critically acclaimed films, work and illustrious career."

Mr Driscoll also said he shared a platform with Mr Loach because he had just finished filming in the North East and both were invited to an event, which the audience "loved".

Another Labour source said of Driscoll refusal to apologise for the Loach event: “Those decisions have consequences – namely, that it was impossible for him to go forward as a Labour candidate.”

What a ####ing disgrace the Labour Party is. Loach is the UK's greatest living film director. Internationally recognised as a master director. A man with a huge heart and an affinity for working people and their often brutal and oppressed lives.

That there's no room for him in Labour, that he's become toxic for simply being a real socialist a career dedicated to social justice and truth telling... well, it beggars belief that even talking to him is dangerous.

What about the rest of the artistic community? Isn't it time for outrage at the vile Starmer regime? Where's the solidarity with Ken Loach? What about freedom of speech and association? How can anyone with a spine, a conscience, any principles support this dreadful Labour Party. Better to vote for the Tories, at leat their honest about being Tories, not like this shower at Labour. Boris Johnson is arguably more radical and "leftwing" than Keir Starmer.

Apparently Ken Loach is due to attend the Durham Miners' Gala next month.

Some Labour MPs usually attend. Will they get into trouble? Or, will they be OK if they socially distance themselves sufficiently from KL?

Perhaps the Party will issue guidelines as to the distance expected. Could be awkward in the hospitality tent.
